Homemade Pumpkin Spice Syrup

Hello again Blue Birds & Pumpkin Spice Friends (PSF’s)! I just finished the recipe for Pumpkin Walnut Cookies, and now this is the 7th addition to our Fall Recipe Series. This one is a bit of a transition. I’m going to be making the next few recipes fit in the beverage category, specifically espresso, latté, and coffee creations (some of you might even use for adult beverages). The best way to start this new phase is with this Homemade Pumpkin Spice Syrup Recipe.

This recipe is perfect as the weather starts getting cooler and we all start thinking about that traditional flavor and smell of pumpkin spice. I purchased my espresso maker during the pandemic, and quickly realized it was tastier and cheaper to make our lattés and macchiatos at home. Over time, I have tried different flavors and recipes, and this pumpkin spice syrup is one of my favorites. I have a new bottle of homemade syrup in my fridge right now, and hopefully soon, you will too.

Let’s get started!

Pumpkin Spice Syrup | Full Recipe Video

This fun video follows the recipe in detail!

I enjoy including these full recipe videos for almost every recipe post. It is a benefit for both me and you. I really do love experimenting with different syrups and espresso creations, and the videos document it. Posting this video for all of you helps you see details that the written recipe alone can’t provide. You’ll see how I add each ingredient and how the syrup mixture changes during the heating process. I always include extra tips that are easier to explain visually. The best way to use this video is to watch or at least listen while following along with the written recipe below. Let’s start making some syrup!

If you’ve completed the video recipe and are a lover of pumpkin pie and cookies, check out our Recipe for Pumpkin Pie Cookies. You can enjoy them with your next Pumpkin Spice Espresso creation.

Pumpkin Spice Syrup Recipe

This recipe will make approximately 1 cup (16 ounces, 1/2 liter) of delicious Pumpkin Spice Syrup. It is enough to make several pumpkin spice lattes. To transition your traditional latte to a pumpkin spice latte, all you need to do is substitute this syrup in for the vanilla syrup.

You can also use 1-2 tablespoons of this pumpkin spice syrup in any espresso drink or a single serving of any other beverage to give it the great autumn vibes. It is extremely versatile and easy to use!

INGREDIENTS

vanilla bean and vanilla extract on stovetop

*You can purchase in the spice section of any baking aisle, or make your own by using ½ tsp Ground Cinnamon, ¼ tsp Ground Nutmeg, ⅛ tsp Ground Ginger, ⅛ tsp Ground Cloves.

INSTRUCTIONS

pumpkin spice syrup stirred in saucepan
  1. Grab a medium saucepan and pour in the water and sugar. Heat on medium heat and stir to mix. Heat for approximately 5 minutes stirring occasionally until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Next, add in the pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice. Continue to heat over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring frequently until the mixture is well combined and a bit thicker.
  3. Take the vanilla bean pod, slice vertically, and scrape out the tiny black vanilla caviar within. You can discard the empty vanilla pod.
  4. Remove your saucepan from the direct heat and stir in the vanilla extract and vanilla caviar.
  5. Let the syrup cool for a couple minutes then strain (recommend 90 grade cheese cloth). This removes any solid pieces.
  6. The syrup is immediately ready to use in your next latté or other beverage of choice
  7. For storage: Let the syrup cool to room temp before storing in an airtight clean container (I like to use flip top jars). The syrup will stay fresh in a refrigerator up to 2 weeks.
