Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte
Happy Fall everyone! If you have checked out my recent Pumpkin Spice Syrup Recipe, you know how much I love lattes. After covering mainly baking recipes for the past couple years, I thought it would be fun to change things up and add some caffeinated beverages to the mix. Since it’s the autumn season, it was a no-brainer to kick it off with this Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte. You really do need to try out this PSL, so let’s go!
Pumpkin Spice Latte Taste
I’m not a professional food critic, so please forgive my simple language, but I will try my best to describe the taste of this Pumpkin Spice Latte. Right now, I’ve got a hot mug in my hands, and it has the distinct smell of the ground cinnamon and nutmeg. I use whipped cream, so the first sip always begins with this sweet creamy texture.
The reason everyone loves lattes is the friendly pairing of the slightly bitter espresso with milk, and that forms the foundation of this beverage as well. The pumpkin puree and spices taste like the best homemade pumpkin pie, and are the epitome of this cooler season. One thing I always make sure to include is the natural smooth flavor of vanilla, nothing else matches that taste and aroma. That flavor finishes each sip off in a fantastic way.

Full Recipe for Pumpkin Spice Latte
This recipe makes one (1) Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte, but it makes enough of the pumpkin base for five (5) more future lattes. You can store the pumpkin base in the fridge for 2-3 weeks.
I divided this recipe into two (2) separate sections to make it easier to follow. The first section is for the “Pumpkin Base.” This Pumpkin Base recipe makes roughly 1 ½ cups, which is enough for six (6) Pumpkin Spice Lattes. Don’t worry about having leftovers, because there are many other delicious uses for the Pumpkin Base, and I include some further down on this page.
Pumpkin Base Ingredients
- 1 cup Pumpkin Puree
- ½ cup Sugar
- 2 tsp Pumpkin Spice*
- 2 tsp Vanilla Extract (check out our Small Batch Vanilla Extract)
*You can purchase in any baking aisle, or make your own by using 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon, ½ tsp Ground Nutmeg, ¼ tsp Ground Ginger, ¼ tsp Ground Cloves
Latte Ingredients
- ¼ cup Pumpkin Base (from above)
- 2 Shots Espresso
- 1 cup (8 oz) Milk
- Whipped Cream (optional)
These ingredients make an awesome Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte. If you are interested in a vegan option, check the section further down.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Start mixing the pumpkin base by adding the pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract to a small/medium saucepan. Mix ingredients together. Heat on medium heat until the mixture is hot but not boiling, between 5-10 min. The heating process takes me 5 minutes. Stir frequently to heat evenly.
- Brew two shots of espresso and pour into your Chosen Mug
- Pour ¼ cup of pumpkin base (from Step #1) into your Chosen Mug
- Steam 1 cup (8 oz) of milk or non-dairy alternative by using steamer/frother or heat in small saucepan until it’s steaming.
- Pour steamed/frothed milk into your Chosen Mug, and mix everything together.
- Add optional whipped cream and sprinkle pumpkin spice over the top if desired.
Other Uses for the Pumpkin Base
I knew that there would be many uses for the pumpkin base used in this recipe, so I did a little thinking and digging. Here is what I came up with:
- Pumpkin Pancakes
- Pumpkin Waffles
- Pumpkin Soup
- Pumpkin Bread or Pumpkin Muffins (or you can make our Pumpkin Spice Muffins Recipe)
Vegan Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe Option
It is VERY simple to make this a Vegan Pumpkin Spice Latte. Do not use the optional ingredient of whipped Cream. Also, you will need to substitute 1 cup of a non-dairy option in place of the 1 cup of milk. You can use:
- Oat Milk – great for lattes, has a creamy consistency and is frothy enough for latte art
- Almond Milk – not as thick, the light flavor that makes it popular matches with lattes too
- Soy Milk – a bit sweeter than cows milk, but has a slight bean aftertaste that bothers some
Enjoy Your Latte
However you choose to consume your Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte, I’m sure you will enjoy it. The key is to keep experimenting and tweaking the recipe to meet your preference to end up with your perfect fall latte.

It gets hot down here in the ATL, so I’ll be making in iced form each time
It does just taste better with whipped cream. Also, thanks for not bombarding the recipe with ads like every other site lol!
I made my own Pumpkin Spice for this recipe, and added a dash of all spice. Sipping my latte now
