Dulce de Leche Brownies

Guess what? I’m back… this time with another Brownie Recipe! We have made several brownie recipe videos over the past few months, and it’s time to bring them over here in written form to share with all of you! I’ve already shared our Chocolate Chip Brookies Recipe, which many of you have baked and loved. It’s hard to go wrong with that marriage of brownies and cookies, and it motivated us to go down this path. This is going to be another popular one, so it is a good one to kick us off (if you can’t tell, I’m ready for football season to start) and begin this journey! I’m excited to share this one in particular, because I feel like it is a great option year round, and it will become a hit in your family like it is in mine.

By the time you finish, you’ll have rich, fudgy brownies with the swirls of dulce de leche. It’s always fun to serve these brownies to family and friends. They look like standard brownies from afar, but once you taste them, you can ALWAYS taste the difference. I mean, who doesn’t love a good brownie???

P.S. – Once you finish the recipe, don’t forget to set one aside for yourself… you deserve it!

Look closely and you can see the delicious secret 🙂

We are not expert bakers, and we record these videos to show how approachable baking can be. I also like to make the mistakes myself, so you can avoid them in the future. If we can bake these brownies, you can do an even better job!

Once you are finished checking out this recipe, you need to see our Best Homemade Brownie Cheesecake Recipe. It’s yet another perfect pairing of two sweet friends, brownie and cheesecake. It may take a bit longer than these Dulce De Leche Brownies, but they both pack a delicious punch!

Brief Facts about Dulce de Leche

Dulce de leche means “sweet milk” in Spanish, which is an accurate description of this ingredient that tastes similar to caramel. It involves taking milk and sugar and cooking them slowly until they combine and transform into a thicker, darker, and sweeter substance. The exact origin is hazy, and many countries have tried to claim it.

Our Homemade Vanilla Bean Paste
  • You can use store-bought Dulce de Leche, but we recommend making your own.
  • Check out our Homemade Vanilla Bean Paste Recipe that we recently published. It can be substituted 1:1 with vanilla extract, so you would need 1 tsp Vanilla Bean Paste for this recipe.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350℉ and prepare an 8 x 8″ baking pan with parchment paper. Parchment paper is much easier to work with, makes cleanup easier, and overhanging the sides a bit helps lift the finished brownies out.
  2. Grab a medium mixing bowl and combine flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. Use a whisk to thoroughly mix.
  3. In a separate large bowl, use a handheld or stand mixer to mix the stick of melted butter with sugar. Mix in the eggs and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Add the dry ingredients from Step #2 to the bowl of wet ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  5. Grab the prepared baking pan and add in half of the brownie batter. Then drop in half of the dulce de leche over the batter, and use a knife to swirl or mix it into the batter.
  6. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top, then add the remaining half of the brownie batter over the top.
  7. Next, add in the other half of dulce de leche over the batter, and once again use a knife to swirl or mix it into the batter.
  8. Bake it @ 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick entered into the center comes out clean.
  9. Carefully remove the brownie pan from the oven and allow it to cool for 5-10 minutes. Lift the brownies out using the parchment paper overhang, then cut into squares.

Additional Tips, Tricks, and Helpful Info

adding chocolate chips to dulce de leche brownies
  • The recipe includes instructions to swirl the dulce de leche with a knife. This is supposed to make a marbled appearance and effect. It was difficult for us to perfectly swirl it, so we smoothed and swirled the best we could. Once again, the brownies still looked and tasted great when finished.
  • We decided to add the chocolate chips to the top of the brownies instead of the middle, and it turned out just fine. We used a knife to smooth them in so they would be held in place during baking.
  • Don’t worry or stress about perfectly leveling and layering the dulce and brownie batter. For example, you don’t need to use exactly half of the dulce and brownie batter for the different layers. Approximations work just fine; it is more of an art than a science.

Congrats, we’ve now baked a homemade batch of Dulce de Leche Brownies that will put a smile on your face. This isn’t just a batch of brownies, it’s a reflection of putting effort into something that can be shared with others. Any time you decide to bake, it’s nice to take a second to compliment yourself, you did it!

Enjoy your delicious brownies!!!
