We just finished our awesome recipe for rich and fudgy Dulce de Leche Brownies. I had such a good time baking, I decided to keep the party going by making a quick post explaining how to make the star ingredient for that recipe, Dulce de Leche. So here it is: The Homemade Dulce de Leche Recipe. This ingredient is not just limited to brownies, I list several other delicious options at the bottom of this post.

Now, let’s begin!!!

Dulce de Leche Recipe Video

This is a very simple and straightforward recipe. I have included long form videos for other ingredients, like our Homemade Vanilla Paste Recipe. This time, I decided it would be easiest and more fun to make a short video. I have linked the short to the bottom of this page, and you can also click the link “Jump to Video” at the top of this post to watch it.

Making your own homemade ingredients allows you to customize it to your taste and preferences. In this case, you can choose how long to heat the dulce to make it darker and richer.

Once you have finished this Dulce de Leche recipe, you need to Learn how to make Homemade Honey Butter. It’s another simple yet powerful ingredient that elevates pancakes, waffles, toast, muffins and scones to another level!

INGREDIENTS

can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can of Sweetened Condensed Milk (14 oz)

INSTRUCTIONS

pouring water into baking pan
  1. Preheat your oven to 425℉
  2. Use a can opener to carefully open the can of sweetened condensed milk. Pour the can into an oven-safe bowl and cover with aluminum foil.
  3. Place the covered bowl into a larger baking pan and begin filling the pan with water. Keep adding water until the water level is approximately halfway up the side of the bowl.
  4. Place the pan in the preheated oven and heat for 1 to 1.5 hours. Check every 30 minutes to verify the water level hasn’t dropped significantly. Add more water if necessary.
  5. Once the dulce de leche has reached a brown color (similar to caramel), carefully remove the pan from the oven.
  6. Whisk or stir the dulce de leche until it reaches a smooth consistency. Let it cool for ~ 10 minutes, then it will be ready to enjoy!

Fun Ways to Use Dulce de Leche

These brownies tasted amazing with our most valuable ingredient!

My favorite recipe for using this uniquely smooth and sweet ingredient is our Chocolate Chip Brownies with Dulce de Leche. I have found many other fun ways to use it too:

  • Cookies – versatile enough to be included in many different cookie recipes. A wonderful match used in chocolate chip cookies.
  • Cheesecake – great addition to the cream cheese filling and can also be included as topping.
  • Ice cream – works well as a topping, can be drizzled on top
  • Pie – can be used similar to caramel in many different pie recipes.
  • Alfajores – these round-shaped cookie sandwiches taste great with the dulce de leche in the middle. Popular in Spain and South American countries.

Do you have experience or ideas for desserts that can include dulce de leche as an ingredient??? I would love to hear them! Please leave in the comment section below. I read and respond to every comment.
